<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif";"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">We
often use wine to make an occasion special, to make a toast, or to celebrate
someone or something, and it’s a wonderful way to enjoy that which wine has to
offer. Today though, I consider the wine
itself to be the moment. The simple pleasure
of the sip can be the occasion; it’s that moment when the wine offers the
flavour, the comfort, or the refreshment you’re looking for. Today, that wine is the Shea Wine Cellars
Shea Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir. Now I
know it sounds like a repetitive name but the significance is that the Shea
Vineyard (where many of Oregon’s
top Pinot’s come from) is the property of Shea Wine Cellars, so while they sell
a large portion of fruit from Shea, they keep their favourite bunches for their
own wines and it is spectacular! The moment holds aromas and flavours of sweet
spices, floral musk, raspberry, sweet beets, stewed strawberry, earth, hints of
candied berries, and tangy cherry. The wonderfully balanced acidity and
structure keep the wine elegant and focused with a persistent finish that
showcases the well integrated fruit. It’s a perfect wine for an autumn moment.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">With
the dawn of spring here, Easter just around the corner, and my body finally
adjusting to Daylight Savings Time… it’s time for rise and shine wines! Not necessarily wake up, roll out of bed and
hit the bottle wines, but wines to waken the palate; wines with freshness to whet the
appetite; welcome the spring; and celebrate wine and food. Both whites and reds are appropriate in my
opinion and here a few options that I enjoy.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">In
my wine experience, I have what I like to call 'wishlist wines'. These are wines I admire from afar; wines
that are often impossible to find or impossible to afford. Some people say it is better not to meet your
heroes, and so perhaps it is best to keep the dream wines a fantasy we can
admire in books, magazines or on extravagant wine lists. Now the flipside to the coin is what I like
to refer to as 'workhorse wines'. While
the term does not conjure up a very romantic image, it describes wines that I
can take pleasure in on a regular basis.
Wines that are approachable at a relatively young age, and have appeal
both as a wine to enjoy by the glass as well as being suitably food-friendly. One such wine, that both my wife Rachel and I
count amongst our favourites, is the Chateau St. Cosme Little James Basket
Press Grenache.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Particularly
appropriate as Grenache is one of my favourite red wine grapes for winter
drinking, the Little James is a fantastic wine made by Chateau St. Cosme in
Gigondas. It is produced in a solera style, which in this case means
it is made up of 50% current vintage wine blended with a combination of the
previous 10 vintages. This fractional
blending gives the wine a very consistent, approachable style that offers
wonderful complexity. On the nose you
will find subtle earthy hints, dried red and black berry fruits, vanilla and
sweet herbal notes. The palate is dry
and medium full bodied with rich mouthfeel, balanced structure and layered
black fruits, prune, cocoa powder and slightly nutty spice notes, with a very
smooth lingering finish. Terrific to
have on its own, or with a variety of firm cheeses, grilled meat, cassoulet or
shepherd's pie. Put your feet up and
enjoy!

We recently attended the Italian Trade
Commission ‘Wines of Italy’ tasting in Vancouver,
and enjoyed it greatly. Italian wines,
whether rustic or modern, tend to exude the sense of terroir very well. They
maintain a strong sense of character that gives them a typically Italian
style. Lots of acidity, grippy tannins,
aromatics, colour etc, all of which are very appealing. There is a soft spot in
my heart for Italian wines, specifically those of the north, and it was these
wines that I was most focused on, in particular Barbaresco.

Barbaresco is often overshadowed by its
cousin Barolo, but while they do share some similarities, Barbaresco offers a
favourable alternative in terms of both style and price point. Produced in the Barbaresco region of
Piemonte, from the Nebbiolo grape, the wines are robust reds with an elegant,
slightly more feminine edge to them.
They generally take less time to mature, and so become more pleasant and
more approachable at a younger age while maintaining structure, and fruit
integrity. Barbarescoes are delicious
and exceptional for pairing with classic Italian fare, roasted game, braised
meats, and firm cheeses. Here are a few
I enjoyed:

Notedinanto Barbaresco – slightly dull red
colour, richly aromatic with floral spice notes, black fruits, and
leather. Dry, full bodied, with rich
grippy tannins, juicy acidity, and flavours of anise, dried cherry, and baking
spice, with a warm lingering finish.

Marchesi di Barolo Barbaresco – light ruddy
ruby colour, moderately aromatic with hints of strawberry, sandalwood and sweet
herbal notes. Dry, medium-full bodied
with slightly rustic hints of tar, leather, red berries, and a touch of mocha
in the finish.

La Spinona Barbaresco – ruddy ruby colour, moderate
aromatics of leather, dried berries, and licorice. Dry, full bodied, balanced acidity and tannic
structure, hints of sweet earth, baking spice, tea, candied berry and a long
layered finish.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif";"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">I
recently had the great pleasure of enjoying a meal with some good friends. One of whom was a former team member of our
Blackcomb Liquor Store & Fitzsimmons Pub family, returned to BC from Australia for a
short vacation. As a wine enthusiast,
any excuse will do to fetch something from the cellar and this being such an
occasion I felt obliged to pull out some fun and interesting wine. Dining on rib-eye steaks, grilled to
perfection, broccoli sautéed with pumpkin seeds, and baby potatoes, we enjoyed
a very pleasant evening together. Here
are two of the accompanying wines which provide an interesting comparison to
each other both in terms of vintage and region.
(Both of these wines were gently decanted approximately 5 hours prior to
drinking.)

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif";"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A
wonderful example of how interesting aged Bordeaux
can be. The deep ruby colour showed some
age as it was starting to fade to a ruddy, brick tone. The aromas were layered and also showing
maturity with dried leafy floral notes, classic hints of cedar bark, graphite
minerality, subtle hints of leather, dusty earth, some savoury spice notes,
clay, and dried currant and raspberry fruit.
The palate was dry with balanced acid and softening tannic structure,
and medium to medium-full body. The
delicate flavours of leathery cassis and slightly raisiny red berry carried
through with hints of dried violets, green peppercorn, and licorice. Polished and balanced through the persistent
finish. Quite elegant overall, still
drinking well, excellent with the meat.

<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif";"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">A
slight surprise here with a display of more elegance than I had suspected, for
such a big vintage. Fairly dense purple
colour with some ruddy ruby creeping in around the edges. The nose was moderately youthful with some
developing character showing fruit dominant notes of cassis, sun dried cherry,
toasty vanilla, subtle wood spice and a slightly nutty cocoa hint. The palate was dry, with balanced structure
and just a slightly warmer alcohol feel than the Bordeaux.
Medium full bodied with stewed red and black fruits, hints of cassis
cordial, toast and slightly sweet nutty spice notes. Long finish with a warm lingering note. Overall well balanced, and maturing well with
a core of focused fruit, paired well with meat, offers more fruity drinking
pleasure on its own.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">What's
in a name? Well sense of identity I
suppose; and with wines and grapes it is as applicable as with any other
thing. We, in North
America, remain quite varietally focused with our wines. We tend to gravitate towards wines named for
the grape or grapes that they are produced from, and perhaps that is part of
the success of Pinot Grigio. I think
people like to say the name, and it sounds exotic enough yet seems familiar
enough that it isn't intimidating. Plus
let's face it... it's not chardonnay, and for many wine drinkers that fact
alone is enough to attract attention.
<span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"><span style="font-family: Georgia, "Times New Roman", serif;">So,
whether you like to say Pinot Gris or Pinot Grigio, you are talking about the
same grape. Different countries and
different producers will result in differing styles, but ultimately it's the
same grape. It tends to be light and crisp,
with delicate aromatics, and slightly leaner structure than its cousins Pinot
Blanc and Chardonnay, and has an affinity towards lighter fare and seafood, or
simply makes a refreshing companion to more intensely flavoured dishes. A few that I am fond of are as follows:

keeping with a summery theme, this month I’ve chosen a few wines suitable for
the classic summer picnic at the park, beach, backyard, pool deck… whichever
you may find yourself on. Picnic wines,
(like their first cousins ‘patio pleasers’), offer appealing and refreshing
character, but must also provide a little more; a touch more structure, texture
or subtle savoury notes to enhance the food affinity, bringing out the best in
your food and drink.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Las
Brisas Blanco – clear, pale straw in colour, with young moderate aromatic notes
of flower blossom, white tree fruits, and tropical citrus. The palate is dry, quite fruit forward with
moderate acidity, ripe follow up fruit character with slightly candied pear and
delicate green herbal hints. This
Spanish white makes a match for oysters, mussels and clams or a fruit plate by
the beach with a little chevre.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Domaine
Nizas Rose – clear, beautiful rosy pink
in colour, with a youthful aromatic character offering rose notes, apple skin,
delicate red berries, and sweet herbs.
Light to medium bodied and dry, with complex orange peel acidity,
delicate hints of tangy cherry, strawberry and garden shoots. A great partner for lighter fare from the
grill, Gazpacho soup, or an array of salami, ham, Proscuitto and other
charcuterie.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Laudun
Chusclun Cotes du Rhone Blanc – clear and very pale in colour, with crisp
youthful aromas on the nose offering fresh flowers, citrus blossom, and subtle
hints of melon, and honey. The palate is
dry and medium full bodied, with balanced juicy acidity, subtle richness in the
mouth feel and hints of melon, delicate white fruits, and mineral. A terrific wine to have with leftover fried
chicken, a fresh summer salad, or grilled turkey sausages.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">So,
pick your picnics carefully and don’t forget the wine!

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Cheers!
Blackcomb Liquor Storehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13546940178299699153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942829908263794399.post-77307820204552470402012-06-24T11:42:00.000-07:002012-06-24T11:42:01.874-07:00Patio Pleasers<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">In
an attempt to hasten the arrival of the summer weather I am dedicating this to some
local BC white wines, well-suited to
sipping in a warm comfortable spot in the sun.
Wines of refreshing, aromatic, fruit driven character that maintain
suitable balance and acidity to keep the palate wanting just one more sip!

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Stoneboat
‘Chorus’ White – is a suitably named harmonious white blend including varieties
such as Kerner, Schoenburger, Viognier and more. The blend here accentuates the layers of
fruit both on the nose and palate with ripe melon, tropical citrus, and hints
of honey and mineral. It brings forth a
touch of sweetness but retains an excellent crisp refreshing finish.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Stag’s
Hollow ‘Con-Fusion’ White – this is another field blend white that tends to
vary year by year depending on the vintage.
A little more delicate on the nose with light floral white citrus, green
apple and stone fruit notes. The
relatively dry palate provides ripe follow up fruit, and a thirst-quenching
freshness.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Hester
Creek Trebbiano - the only BC version of
this classic Italian white that I have ever come across. Mid-weight and juicy with warm weather
compatible flavours of sweet grass, lemony citrus, and apple-pear notes. A very subtle hint of richness on the palate,
and persistent juicy finish make it a perfect picnic wine.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Forbidden
Fruit ‘Earth Series’ Sauvignon Blanc – this beauty is made from a clone sourced
from Sauternes, and offers an enormous bowl of fruit on the nose. Grapefruits, melon, apricots, guava, and
orchard fruit, followed by a palate that is slightly less intense, but remains
crisp, and just a touch off dry and will seduce and surprise. Think of it as the anti-Marlborough Sauvignon
Blanc!

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">So
once the sunshine gets here, or anytime you need a refresher, try one of these
patio pleasers, and sip with a smile!

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> <span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Garamond","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Cheers!
Blackcomb Liquor Storehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13546940178299699153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942829908263794399.post-86008858128141233622012-04-26T13:32:00.001-07:002012-04-26T13:32:45.059-07:00Grgich Hills<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">I
recently had the pleasure of meeting and tasting with John Corcoran from Grgich
Hills Estate winery, a winery I have not tasted in a few years, and I was very
pleased at the outcome. Grgich Hills is
located in Rutherford in California’s Napa Valley;
and was founded in 1977; one year after winemaker Mike Grgich won the infamous Paris tasting with his
1973 Chateau Montelena Chardonnay. They
are currently self-proclaimed stewards of the land, and since 2003 produce
wines grown exclusively in their own estates.
The estate vineyards are certified organic and Bio dynamic, and they
operate the winery on solar power.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">The
wines of Grgich Hills are obviously from California,
yet they maintain an interesting, somewhat ‘old world’ style. Limited use of oak, elegant fruit profiles,
and consistent acidity and structure all add to the quality, and the expression
of the terroir or sense of
place. I tasted the Fume Blanc, two
vintages of Chardonnay, Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and their Yountville
Selection Cabernet Sauvignon. My
impressions are as follows.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Fume Blanc 2010<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">: delicate
youthful aromas of lemongrass, hints of under-ripe melon, slight citrus and
green apple notes. The palate is dry,
with very crisp acidity and light bodied white citrus, spicy minerality, and
grassy notes with a juicy finish. A
great wine for light seafood, shellfish or anything with lots of chevre on it.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Chardonnay 2009<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">: mild,
youthful bouquet of vanilla, floral, leesy spice notes, with subtle hints of
toast, ripe citrus and orchard fruits.
The palate is dry, with juicy acidity, medium weight with a slight rich
feel. Flavours of citrus, green apple,
lees notes, light oak, and a lemony finish make it a match for Brie cheese,
pasta in cream sauce, or crab legs and garlic butter.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Napa<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> Valley<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> Cabernet Sauvignon 2008<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">: moderate,
youthful aromas offer red and black currant, cherry, light sweet oak, licorice,
cedar, and delicate leafy notes. It is
dry on the palate with moderate balanced structure, juicy acidity, ripe black
cherry, cassis, tangy prune and cocoa flavours with a slight toast in the
finish. Enjoy with a grilled steak or rack of lamb.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">Yountville Selection
Cabernet Sauvignon 2007<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;">: produced in very small quantities, this offers
a full nose of youthful sweet hay, toast, prune plum, cassis, savoury sweet
pepper, tobacco and delicate woodspice.
Dry and full bodied, with a ripe upfront fruit note. The balanced elegant structure, slight grip
to the tannins, and chocolate, cherry, cassis, violets, prunes and spice lead
into a lingering finish. A match for
prime rib, osso bucco, or roasted game.

<span lang="EN-US" style="font-family: "Georgia","serif"; font-size: 13pt;"> Cheers!

One of the few remaining family-owned and operated highland distilleries, Glenfarclas has been headed by the Grant family for generations, not the Grant family of William Grant’s brand, but another Grant family, (all of them named either John or George). Nestled along the banks of the Spey River in the Highland district, they have been busy distilling since 1836, and continue to create beautiful single malt whiskies to this day. Using premium select barley malt and highland spring water, Glenfarclas whiskies are painstakingly milled, mashed, fermented and batch-distilled in small copper stills and then carefully aged, and finished in oak barrels 60% sherry cask finish and 40% new oak.

The Glenfarclas whiskies are of varying ages and character ranging from 10 year old to 40 year old, as well as special bottlings and a line of single vintage whiskies by year dating back as early as 1953! But one trait shared by all of them is an elegant aromatic character. By using no peat in the malting of the grain, the intense, sometimes bitter, smokey note is not present and so the whiskies become a touch more perfumed and delicate on the nose, enhanced by the influence of the sherry barrels. On the palate these are classic Speyside style single malts. Smooth, and layered with light fruity malt notes, spice, caramel and a lingering warmth, perfect for sipping by the fireplace.

Although not all of the Glenfarclas whiskies are available in British Columbia, my favourites include: the 8 year old which is brilliant as younger single malts go and has a fresher, slightly rustic malty character; and the 15 year old which is a decadent drop that has a seamless profile from start to finish offering dried fruit notes, nutty, toasty caramel, and baking spice that just drifts on the palate. So, if you find yourself in the vicinity of a comfortable spot, ready for some well-deserved luxury, pour yourself a glass of Glenfarclas and enjoy.

One thing that can tilt the scales either for better or worse, is the use of oak; it can contribute a great deal to the body, flavour, and maturation of wine. The use of oak in wine is a very old concept, but remains to this day a very contentious subject, sparking a love – hate relationship with many wine drinkers. Some wines are vinified in oak either vats or barrels, some wines are matured in oak either older (used) or new barrels or vats of varying sizes, some wines are both vinified and matured in oak. Sometimes the addition of oak chips or staves is used to instill some of the characteristics of oak without the $500+ per barrel cost.

Yet there are a myriad number of wines produced without the use of oak barrels, or barriques, or vats, or anything wood-like. Produced in stainless steel, glass-lined, or concrete tanks, and matured in bottle instead of barrel. These wines can offer just as much character, intensity, and pleasure as their oak-clad cousins but they tend to do so in a racier way, focusing on fruit character and the inherent structural components to keep things ‘lean and mean’. German Rieslings, New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs, Italian Pinot Grigios, and classic Chablis; there are too many to count but here are a few favourites.

Lagaria Pinot Grigio
A light bodied and refreshing dry white wine that has aromas of golden apple, lemon zest, and delicate floral notes. The palate has juicy acidity and crisp fruit character with a clean finish. This wine pairs well with kalamari, creamy pasta, or a little garlic sausage.

Churton Sauvignon Blanc
A sharp, modern-style Sauvignon Blanc from a family operated estate. Filled with aromas of tropical citrus and peppery, grassy herbaceous notes. The palate is medium-full and offers ripe gooseberry, tangy citrus, and mouth watering acidity. It makes a great match for shell fish, light seafood, or a hunk of Chevre.

Nero del Nago Corvina
A clean mid-weight red with a nose offering hints of cherry, subtle spice and a sweet leathery hint. The palate is medium bodied, with balanced structure and mouth filling flavours of red and black fruits with a trace of earth and herbs. A wine for lasagna, pork sausage, or roast duck breast.

Von Buhl ‘Armand’ Riesling
This lovely German number has an alluring aroma of floral stone fruit, citrus, and a slight stony minerality. The juicy palate offers more of the same in fruit character, (just a touch off-dry), laced with appley notes and racy acidity that pairs with almost everything from schnitzel to fondue to a sunny afternoon.

Enjoy!
The snow continues to fall, eagles return to their northern nests, spring breaks begin, we celebrate the occasional leap year as well as Valentine’s day, and much more. So no matter what your reason to sit back and enjoy a little wine I recommend you do so – and here are a few of my February favourites.

ADAMI BOSCO DI GICA: a superb bubbly from a superb producer. Adriano Adami is painstaking bordering on obsessive about his proseccos. The Bosco di Gica is a classic extra dry, with alluring perfumed floral, appley-citrus fruit and wonderful juicy acidity creamy bubbles, and persistent finish making it fun to drink on its own or a great match for a crisp salad, creamy pasta dish, or some fresh oysters.

PARES BALTA BLANC DE PACS: a unique white wine in that it is a blend of Parellada, Macabeo, and Xarello; totally obscure grapes used for Cava, (Spanish sparkling wine), production but vinified in a dry table wine style. A light greenish-yellow colour with leafy flowery notes hinting at orchard fruits. Delicate and crisp on the palate with tangy citrus and apple-pear notes, a pleasant richness to the mouth feel and a long juicy finish. Another great by-the-glass wine or perfect for green olive tapenade, seafood, or mild cheeses.

GIANFRANCO ALESSANDRIA BAROLO: wonderful mid-winter red with soft ruby red colour fading slightly around the edges. The nose is layered with dried flowers, orange peel, tar, leather and spice. The well structured palate is balanced and has an elegant strength as it offers intense dried dark berry fruit, bittersweet cocoa, subtle earthiness, leather and tremendous length. Perfect to chase away the winter chill or enjoy with savoury braised beef ribs, or game stew.

Try these wines, or others and make your own February Favourites list; it’s a great way to pass the time while our days are still short and our nights are still cold. Remember: variety is the spice of life so try something new next time you pull the cork.
Cheers!Blackcomb Liquor Storehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13546940178299699153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942829908263794399.post-49923811329167813332010-11-22T19:46:00.000-08:002010-11-22T19:47:36.353-08:00Holiday CheerIt is easy to become distracted during the rush of December. The population of our little mountain town triples seemingly overnight. We hear the clamour of lift lines, we see the joyous faces of children temporarily freed from the confines of schools, and we put our best foot forward to welcome another winter season. But when the snow falls thick and deep, and the hustle-bustle of the holidays is at its finest, we take comfort in the companionship of friends and family. We share together good company, boisterous conversation, food and drink, and great cheer. What better way to do that than with fine wine. It warms away a chill; it soothes a weary traveler; it calms the nerves; it whets the appetite; and of course it makes a great gift! The following are some of my favourites for happy holidays:

La Serra Moscato d’Asti – a classic, delicate and aromatic fruit-filled white, with just enough bubble and a hint of sweetness to make you want another glass. Besides, a little breakfast wine isn’t such a bad thing!

Tantalus Old Vines Riesling – a brilliant BC white wine produced in a drier style with racy acidity, crisp citrus and mineral notes. A palate loaded with nectarine, lean lemony fruit and hints of pine and slate. Great with anything from cheese plates to turkey dinners.

Hendry Block 28 Zinfandel – a long running family-run estate grown Zinfandel, offering ripe aromas and flavours of brambly berry fruit, leather, woodspice, and warm alcohol framed in French oak. A match for turkey, roast duck, or a little dark chocolate.

Domaine de Nizas Old Vines Carignan – an underappreciated red from Southern France with lots of body, dried berries, black olive and baking spice notes. Rich and robust, it will pair well with roast game or braised meat dishes.

Quinta do Crasto Vintage Port – the ultimate after dinner drink. Sweet and fortified, it virtually tastes like Christmas pudding in a glass, with a long lingering warmth that leaves you satisfied in a cozy armchair.

So whenever and however you celebrate this holiday season, as you sit with friends or gather around the festive feast. Remember to take time and enjoy a little holiday cheer.

Wishing you all the best for a happy and healthy holiday season!

Cheers!
The Blackcomb Wine Club always welcomes new people!

The Blackcomb Wine Appreciation Club has been active since 2001. We are a community interest group focused on developing wine culture and appreciation through tasting and interaction. "Membership" is open - no commitment is required, and there is no membership fee. The club was developed as a sociable way to enjoy tasting wines, and discover new favourites (and learn a little too!).

Events are generally held once per month at The Fitzsimmons Pub and occasionally at other venues (such as the Whistler Brewery or the Fairmont Wine Room etc). There is a small drop in fee of $5 - $10/person. The format is a sit-down, structured tasting, wine by wine, with host/moderator frequently with special guest speakers and occasional wine and food pairing dinners.

Members are able to sample wines before purchasing, and there are significant wholesale savings when purchasing in quantities of cases or half cases (12 or 6 bottles).

Future events are posted on The Blackcomb Liquor Store Facebook page.

You are invited to our next event. Come out and expand your palate and try some new wines!Blackcomb Liquor Storehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13546940178299699153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942829908263794399.post-23604067988778260952010-10-06T14:09:00.000-07:002010-10-06T14:09:29.501-07:00CounterpartsThe concept of counterparts is a straightforward one. Such as: action and reaction, night and day, male and female, and so on. Not necessarily exact opposites, but corresponding differences. This adds definition by contrast, keeps things in balance, helps us to appreciate variety. There are many examples of counterparts in the world of wine, as in nature and everywhere else; but truly one of the most classic and precise examples to be found, is that of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir.

Both are grapes, both hail distantly from the same genetic family, both are enjoyed all over the globe: arguably the two single best known grape varieties worldwide. Chardonnay is a white wine grape; Pinot Noir is a red wine grape. Chardonnay is prolific bordering on ubiquitous while Pinot Noir is the elusive heart breaker of countless winemakers the world over. More often than not they are found in the same growing areas, and in Burgundy they are basically the be all and end all of all wine making bar none.

I happen to enjoy both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, and recently tasted two excellent examples from Hartford Court in California’s Sonoma Valley. Hartford Court is a very limited production winery that focuses heavily on single estate bottlings of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Production of these special wines can range from 800 cases to less than 100 cases.

The Hartford Court Stone Cote Vineyard Chardonnay 2005: produced in 100% French oak, 60% of which is new oak. The wine is clear with a deep golden straw colour that fades slightly around the rim. The nose is moderate and layered with youthful and slightly developed characteristics. It offers creamed corn, vanilla, lime, sweet hazelnut and citrus notes. The palate is dry and medium-full bodied and well-balanced with flavours of spice, toast, white citrus fruits, and a rich buttered biscuit character that lingers well.

The Hartford Court Fog Dance Vineyard Pinot Noir 2005: produced in 100% French oak, 55% of which is new oak. The wine is clear, and shows a pale ruby colour that fades to a slightly ruddy rim. Youthful as well a slightly developed aromatics rise from the glass showing sweet leather, stewed strawberry, woodspice and wet cherry blossom. The palate is dry, medium weight with juicy acidity and gently balanced tannins. Loads of flavours are present giving juicy red berry fruit, hints of sweet beets, tangy cherry, earthy spiciness, and a long warm finish.

Both excellent wines in their own right, as well as fine examples of the “yin and yang” of red and white wines. So even as we head ever closer to colder weather remember to balance your wine enjoyment with both Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, (or whatever counterparts you love best!).

Cheers!
So as Scarlett started by easing her way into the water, (first sitting on the edge, then working her way to jumping in with hands held, and by the third day running headlong off the edge and splashing into the arms of whichever adult happened to be in the water at the time), we made a pact with our generous hosts to drink only good wine during the visit. It was a vintage evening, with perfectly prepared food I sadly do not have time to delve into, but the wines ranging in age from 6 to 11 years, were superb.

The Starter Shafer Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 1999: still inky dark in the centre of the glass yet showing its age around the edge where the purple fades to a ruddy reddish tone. The nose offering dried cassis, prune plums, cocoa and earthy cigar box aromas. The palate is still well structured with the tannins softening in their age yet still supportive of the sweet leathery fruit, black liquorice, and nearly nutty oak character, with a warm and persistent finish.

The Head to Head Mission Hill Family Estate Oculus 2003 vs. Osoyoos Larose Le Grand Vin 2003. Both from the same year, both produced with similar grape varieties, of course sharing several similarities, yet maintaining distinctly different characteristics. Each wine was starting to show the ruddy fade of colour, each wine offering more mature notes on the nose and palate. The Oculus with a more modern style overall had a bit brighter fruit character with kirsch, baked cherry, woodspice notes, and softer tannins, while the Osoyoos Larose was a more true throwback to the Bordelaise with a dense structure, and notes of raisiny cassis, violet and earthy dried pepper. Both wines complemented the lamb magnificently.

The Surprise Foxtrot Vineyards Pinot Noir 2004: the inaugural vintage of this highly esteemed vineyard, who for several years produced grapes for other wineries and now have created a cult following for their exquisite Pinot. Still fairly youthful in character this medium bodied wine maintains a wonderful freshness to its acidity and red dominant fruit character layered with notes of crushed strawberries, dried leaves, game, and a delicate clove like spice. Wonderfully balanced with a lingering finish, this wine will continue to develop over time.

The Closer Woodward Canyon Old Vines Cabernet Sauvignon 2002: a perennial standout produced from the oldest Cabernet vines in Washington state. A beautifully balanced wine from start to finish, slightly red-brick in colour with flavours and aromas of crushed violets, dried black cherries, cassis, dusty packed earth, and old cedar, Wonderfully integrated spicy oak and a very long elegant finish – an incredible wine with a little more longevity to it as well.

So just as Scarlett was rewarded with taking her time as she ventured more and more boldly into the pool, so too were we rewarded with the virtue of patience and time with truly memorable vintage wines. The moral of the story: take your time, and life is too short to drink bad wine.

Enjoy!

Michael Kompass
Blackcomb Liquor Storehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/13546940178299699153noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6942829908263794399.post-20627352764400712952009-12-19T07:10:00.000-08:002009-12-19T07:22:38.831-08:00Special Christmas Edition - Blackcomb Liquor Store Quarterly NewsMERRY CHRISTMAS FROM THE BLS STAFF Well, what a fairy-tale start to the Winter, with mother nature really delivering the goods.
